When I wanted to start investing in Sweden, I found that opening an ISK (Investeringssparkonto) was one of the most practical options.

💡 Note: This article is based on the author’s personal experience using the services mentioned. Individual experiences may vary.

[!NOTE] I last verified these ISK tax rules and details in July 2026. Be sure to check the official Skatteverket website for any updates to the tax rates or limits.

When I started investing here, I chose an ISK because you do not pay capital gains tax on individual trades. Instead, you pay a low annual standardized tax calculated automatically on your total account value. According to Skatteverket, starting January 1, 2026, the first SEK 300,000 in your ISK is tax-free.

To open an ISK online, you need a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer) and Mobile BankID. The setup only takes a few minutes.

How to Open an ISK Account in Sweden A step-by-step guide to opening an ISK account in Sweden, from choosing a provider to making your first investment.

Choose Your Provider

When deciding where to open your account, you can choose between dedicated investment brokers and traditional retail banks:

Digital brokers (which usually have lower fees):

  • Avanza: Sweden’s largest digital broker, offering a free ISK account.
  • Nordnet: A popular alternative with competitive fees.

Traditional banks:

  • SEB, Swedbank, Handelsbanken, Länsförsäkringar, and Danske Bank.

Open the Account Online

If you have BankID, the online process is straightforward:

  1. Log in to your chosen bank or broker using Mobile BankID.
  2. Go to the savings or investments section.
  3. Select “Open new account” or “Open ISK”.
  4. Accept the digital terms.
  5. The account is created instantly.

In-Person or by Phone

If you do not have a Mobile BankID or are a new resident without digital access, you will need to contact a bank directly. For example, Länsförsäkringar can assist you in English by phone or at a branch. You can also request an ISK through Interactive Brokers’ client portal if you are an eligible Swedish resident.

Start Investing

Once the account is active, you can deposit funds and start buying stocks, ETFs, or mutual funds. If you use Interactive Brokers, you may need to convert your cash to Swedish kronor before moving it into the ISK.

Key Benefits

Holding an ISK is free of charge at most providers, including Avanza. Your funds are protected by the Swedish government deposit guarantee and investor protection scheme, making it a safe and tax-efficient way to build up your long-term savings.

Before You Start

If you already have your personnummer and BankID, setting up an ISK is one of the quickest financial tasks you can check off. I recommend comparing fees and fund selections across brokers before you open one, so you find the best fit for your investing style.
