If you have recently moved to Stockholm, learning the language is one of the most important steps to settling in. I registered for SFI (Svenska för invandrare), which is the free Swedish language course offered by Swedish municipalities for adults.

According to the Stockholm municipality, as of January 2026, new rules limit the right to study SFI to three years, though you can get an extension for things like illness, parental leave, or work commitments.

Who Can Enroll?
To sign up in Stockholm, I had to meet a few basic requirements:
- Be registered in the Stockholm municipality (folkbokförd).
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Have a valid residence permit and a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer).
EU/EEA citizens living in Stockholm are also eligible to join. There is no upper age limit, and the courses are designed for complete beginners or those who want to brush up on the basics.
SFI courses in Stockholm are available for all adult immigrants who meet the basic eligibility criteria.
How to Register Step by Step
When I went through the enrollment process, it took four main steps:
Step 1: Submit your application online.
Visit Vuxenutbildning Stockholm and fill out the online form. This is your first point of contact.
Step 2: Attend the assessment meeting.
A test educator will evaluate your school background and any prior language knowledge to figure out whether you should start at level A, B, C, or D.
Step 3: Choose a school and schedule.
You can pick a school nearby. I had the option of daytime classes (about 20 hours a week, Monday to Friday) or evening classes (2 to 3 times a week, totaling 6 to 9 hours).
Step 4: Get your start date.
Once matched, the school will send you an official invitation before the course begins.
Stockholm offers flexible SFI schedules to accommodate different work and personal commitments.
Course Levels and Timeline
The program is divided into four levels: A, B, C, and D. Each level builds on the previous one. How long it takes depends on your pace. If you study 15 hours a week, moving from course A to D can take just over five years, but many of my classmates who took intensive day courses finished much faster.
Grades are awarded upon completion of each course, giving you a clear record of your progress.

Before You Apply
Make sure you have your personnummer ready before you start registering, as you cannot sign up without it. If you have questions or need information in other languages, you can reach out to the Stockholm Adult Education center at sfi@edu.stockholm.se. I recommend starting as early as possible—having a basic grasp of Swedish makes daily life and finding work much easier.
